Vehicle Air Conditioning Maintenance Tips

Maintaining your vehicle’s air conditioning system is critical to ensure you always have enough refrigerant to do the job properly. Even small leaks allow gas to escape, causing the system to work harder and use more fuel.
While we recommend a professional service every 2 years, there are visual checks you can do yourself.
If your system isn’t cooling, check for these common faults before calling us:
Note: Anything beyond this visual inspection requires a qualified technician. Our team is ARC Certified (AU13448), ensuring we manage refrigerants responsibly and legally.
1. Run it once a week Run your air conditioner for at least 10 minutes every week, even in winter. This circulates the oil, preventing the compressor seals and hoses from drying out and cracking.
2. Use the ‘Defrost’ Mode Turn the AC to its coldest setting and highest fan speed, then run the ‘defrost’ mode for 5–10 minutes. This helps clean out accumulated moisture, preventing mildew and that nasty “wet cloth” smell.
3. Use it in Winter Your AC doesn’t just cool; it acts as a dehumidifier. Using it in winter keeps your windscreen free of fog and improves visibility.
4. Keep Windows Up Even on the hottest days, keeping windows closed improves the car’s aerodynamics. This reduces fuel consumption and exterior noise while allowing the AC to cool the cabin efficiently.
Did you know that over 10% of air-con gas permeates (escapes) from the system naturally every year? This is why manufacturers recommend a Regas & Service every two years.
If you wait until the system stops working completely, you risk major compressor failure. A poorly maintained system running on low gas/oil will:
Is your car making you sick? A car air-conditioning system can be a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and fungus, which is dangerous for asthma or allergy sufferers. This build-up creates “Sick Car Syndrome,” causing offensive smells and potential throat infections.
The Solution: We use the latest Ozone Generator technology. This treatment kills bacteria and mould throughout the evaporator, cabin filter, and entire interior, leaving your car smelling fresh and healthy.
We offer the most comprehensive on-site inspection in Brisbane & Redlands.
The Inspection:
The Regas Procedure: If a regas is required, we don’t just “top it up.” We follow a strict protocol:
Valves: Replace Schrader valves to prevent leaks.
Drier: Check Receiver Drier filter (Replacement recommended every 2 years).
Oil: Add required amount of refrigerant compressor oil.
Dye: Add UV dye for future leak detection.
Evacuation: Vacuum system for 20 mins to remove moisture.
Charge: Fill with correct refrigerant type and capacity.
Test: Performance test and leak check (UV lamp & electronic sniffer).
Record: Log pressure and temperature readings.
Refrigerant gases (like R134a) are damaging to the ozone layer. It is illegal to release these gases into the atmosphere, with penalties running into the thousands of dollars.
We Offer a Refrigerant Recovery Service For DIY mechanics or body shops doing their own repairs, we offer a mobile “Pump Down” service to legally recover the gas before you start work.
All our work complies with Refrigerant Reclaim Australia standards. Always check for the ARC Tick when choosing a repairer.
